Betacam tapes had their structure similar to Betamax tapes. So much so that a blank tape of one format could be used to record in the other format. A practice that was later discouraged by Sony due to differences in the internal composition of the Betamax cassettes, which were not appropriate for the higher recording speeds of the Betacam system.
